Chapter 518: Xiao Mo! Look, Quick!
Chapter 518: Xiao Mo! Look, Quick!
Early morning. With a single long stroke of the bell, all the scholars of the Hanshan Academy stirred and woke from their courtyard rooms.
Today was the day the scholars of the Hanshan Academy would set out on their long journey.
Though they did not know where they were going, following the Dean's instructions they had risen early, packed their belongings, and made their way to Orchid Peak.
Before the hour of chen had even fully arrived, every scholar remaining at the Hanshan Academy was already standing in neat order on Orchid Peak.
Each wore a long blue scholar's robe, with a book chest strapped across their back.
In twos and threes they whispered to their friends, quietly speculating about where such a grand gathering could possibly be taking them.
Some among them who had dimly heard hints of what was coming wore expressions of quiet heaviness.
The moment the hour of chen arrived, Cun Caiguang, Dean of the Hanshan Academy, along with several of the academy's senior teachers and administrators, landed on time before the assembled scholars.
"We pay our respects to the Dean."
At the Dean's arrival, everyone stopped their murmuring and gave Cun Caiguang a respectful bow together.
Cun Caiguang returned their bow, then spoke. "Today is the day our Hanshan Academy sets out on its long journey of study. However, this time I will not be accompanying all of you."
"But Teacher Chao will travel alongside you. Whatever you may need in the days ahead, you may bring it to Teacher Chao."
"Beyond that, throughout this journey, everyone must follow all of the arrangements made by Senior Bai without any objection."
The moment Cun Caiguang's words settled, a woman in a white dress descended gracefully from the sky above.
The instant everyone saw her, they were simultaneously struck with wonder at her incomparable beauty and with a faint, creeping unease at the presence emanating from her.
Even more than that, the moment the woman in white stepped onto the peak of Orchid Peak, an unspoken and unanimous urge to kneel and submit rose in the hearts of everyone present.
"From this day forward, every aspect of your journey will be arranged by my elder sister. Before you have left the Demon Realm, no one is permitted to ask unnecessary questions or say unnecessary things!" Little Green stepped forward, her gaze sweeping across those assembled, her tone brisk and decisive. "Is that understood by everyone?"
"Well..." The scholars of the Hanshan Academy looked at each other, all of them sensing a certain imperious quality in this woman's words that did not invite discussion.
"Let us not forget what this old man said just now." Cun Caiguang's voice rang out at the right moment, steady and carrying, reaching every corner of Orchid Peak.
"Yes! We understand." With even the Dean having said as much, no one dared to offer any objection, and they answered together in one voice.
"Then everyone, come aboard." Little Green made a broad gesture, and a small fish flew out from her sleeve.
The small fish caught the wind and grew, expanding rapidly, and in moments had become an enormous whale the size of a mountain, hovering in stillness above everyone's heads.
"Right then, this is as far as I go with you."
At the foot of Qianxue Peak, Xian Xichun looked at the two young people before him and said with a smile.
"The Tushan people are waiting at the academy's outer gate. You will see them the moment you go out."
"You have both been told, I imagine, that the Demon Realm ahead will not be a peaceful place. Whatever happens, your first priority must always be to preserve your own lives. Do not get caught up competing for glory."
"As long as a person lives, everything can begin again."
"But once a person is dead, there is nothing left."
"Do you understand?"
"We understand, teacher." Xiao Mo and Tushan Jingci answered together, their expressions respectful.
"Off you go, then." Xian Xichun looked at these two young people who had been the greatest source of pride and satisfaction in all his years of teaching, his eyes full of hope. "I believe that in the not too distant future, I will live to see the day the two of you make your names resound throughout the world."
"Take care of yourself, teacher." Tushan Jingci and Xiao Mo stepped back and gave Xian Xichun a deep, formal bow.
"Until we meet again, whenever fate brings us together."
Xian Xichun returned the bow, and watched the two young figures walk away into the distance until they had disappeared at the end of the mountain path.
And just as Xiao Mo and Jingci disappeared from Xian Xichun's sight, an old man appeared at his side.
"Those two little ones have left then?" Cun Caiguang gathered his sleeves and looked in the direction Xiao Mo and the others had gone.
"With the Hanshan Academy emptied entirely, what use would there be in them staying?" Xian Xichun turned his head and looked at the Dean. "How are things on the Dean's side?"
"All taken care of. Our academy's scholars are in the process of registering their names and will be setting off very shortly. This old man has nothing left to do, so I thought I would come and see you, and see you off as well." Cun Caiguang turned his head and looked at Xian Xichun, letting out a sigh. "Are you truly going?"
"Ha ha ha, I owe her an answer in the end." Xian Xichun shook his head.
"She is already gone. Even if she knew, she would not want you to throw your life away." Cun Caiguang reasoned with him.
"That may well be true. But when she was alive, I never did as she said either. Now that she is gone, why would I start now?"
With that, Xian Xichun turned and walked off in another direction.
"I am going now, old man. Do not die too quickly yourself, or who will come and collect my remains when the time comes?"
"Xian Xi!" Cun Caiguang called after the retreating figure of the scholar.
The scholar's steps slowed for a brief instant, then he raised a hand in a backward wave without turning around, and his figure gradually disappeared from the old man's sight.
At the same moment, a great wind suddenly swept through the Hanshan Academy.
A tremendous sound rang through the heavens, the call of the whale, earth-shaking and sky-shaking.
The shadow cast by the great whale blocked out the sky, covering the earth below, as though the entire sky were resting on its back.
Cun Caiguang, Xian Xichun, and the people in Hanshan City all raised their heads and watched that enormous creature climbing ever higher.
"Xiao Mo! Look, quick!"
Tushan Jingci, who had been walking toward the Hanshan Academy's outer gate, suddenly raised a hand and pointed high into the sky.
"What an enormous whale!"
"Indeed, very large."
Xiao Mo raised his head, his gaze moving slowly along the direction the great whale was flying.
On the back of the great whale, the twelve hundred and twenty-five scholars of the Hanshan Academy were looking out in all directions, every one of them awed beyond words.
At the very foremost point of the whale's head, the woman in white stood with both hands clasped before her, watching the distance in silence.
The high winds swept through in waves, pressing her long dress tightly against her graceful figure, the hem billowing backward without pause.
Then, all at once, the woman tilted her head slightly and looked in the direction of the Hanshan Academy.
"Sister, what is it?" Little Green walked forward and asked softly.
"Nothing."
Bai Ruxue gave a quiet shake of her head, drew her gaze back, and looked forward again.
"Let us go."
Her voice was calm and cool.
"From today onward, the Demon Realm enters an age of chaos."
