Chapter 515: This, Then, Is My Reason
Chapter 515: This, Then, Is My Reason
When the woman in white arrived at the Hanshan Academy, the Dean Cun Caiguang gave a sweep of his wide sleeve, immediately activating the mountain-protecting great formation, completely concealing every trace of celestial insight from within the academy's bounds. In this way, even a cultivator of the Ascension realm would have no way of knowing what was happening within the Hanshan Academy.
Cun Caiguang then brought Chao Xi and Xian Xichun together to welcome the Lord of the Four Seas.
"The Hanshan Academy respectfully welcomes Your Majesty."
Cun Caiguang led the group before the woman in white, and together they bowed deeply and respectfully.
The woman in white surveyed Cun Caiguang and the two teachers behind him with those eyes like peach blossoms.
After a moment, she spoke in an even tone. "Please rise, everyone. There is no need for such formality."
"Yes."
Cun Caiguang and the others straightened and when Chao Xi and Xian Xichun saw the face of this Lord of the Four Seas clearly, both found themselves rooted to the spot.
Neither had ever seen a woman so beautiful.
The Lord of the Four Seas wore nothing but a plain white long dress, and yet that simple white gown brought out her figure to perfection, neither a touch too much nor a touch too little.
That air of unadorned elegance was like a snow lotus blooming in the heavenly courts, pure and flawless beyond reproach.
Especially her peach-blossom eyes, eyes born with a natural, bewitching allure, the corners tilted upward slightly like a cat's tail. A single careless glance from her seemed to brush gently across the heart, leaving behind an aftertaste impossible to describe.
In terms of figure and appearance, they felt that perhaps only Tushan Jingci of the Nine-Tailed Celestial Fox clan could be spoken of in the same breath as this Lord of the Four Seas but the difference was, Tushan Jingci was still only a young girl who had just come into her full bloom.
While the presence this Lord of the Four Seas radiated, that depth and quality born of having weathered the full sweep of the world across thousands of years, was something no twenty-year-old girl could possibly match and the pressure radiating from her brought both Xian Xichun and Chao Xi an inexplicable sense of dread.
It was the natural, inherent suppression that a true dragon bloodline exerts over ordinary living beings.
Especially when they recalled the various things they had heard of this Lord of the Four Seas's past, their hearts filled with a thousand unspoken feelings.
It could be said that her name was known to virtually everyone, throughout both the Demon Realm and the Ten Thousand Laws Realm.
"It is not very convenient to speak here. I ask that Your Majesty come with us." Cun Caiguang turned to the side and addressed Bai Ruxue with respect.
"Very well." Bai Ruxue gave a small nod, her expression unhurried.
Half an incense stick's time later, the group arrived at Cun Caiguang's courtyard.
Bai Ruxue settled gracefully onto the stone bench, while Little Green stood at her elder sister's side and spoke first. "Dean Cun, let us get straight to the matter at hand. Since you want my sister's help, do not waste time."
"Little Green, mind your manners." Bai Ruxue turned her head and gave her younger sister a gentle reprimand.
Little Green opened her mouth as though to say more, but in the end closed it without speaking further.
"It is no trouble, no trouble at all." Cun Caiguang waved a hand with a smile, entirely unbothered.
He drew a jade pendant from his sleeve and held it out with both hands. "This is the roster of the Hanshan Academy's students, one thousand three hundred and twenty-five in total. I ask that you review it."
Bai Ruxue accepted the jade pendant and channeled a thread of spiritual energy into it.
In an instant, the names and faces of over a thousand Hanshan Academy students rose before her eyes in rapid succession, passing by one after another.
"I have it memorized." Bai Ruxue gave a light flick of her fingertip, sending the jade pendant floating back through the air to Cun Caiguang. "Three days from now, they come with me."
"This..."
A note of difficulty entered Cun Caiguang's tone.
"Your Majesty, it is simply that there are still quite a few students from notable clans and great families studying at our Hanshan Academy who have not yet returned to their respective territories. I wonder if Your Majesty might wait until those students from the great families have safely departed before taking these thousand or so students away?"
"And beyond that, I have not yet informed the students on this list. They currently know nothing of the matter, and will need some time to prepare as well."
"So... might Your Majesty grant us a little more time?"
"Your Hanshan Academy really is something." A faint anger showed on Little Green's face, an obvious impatience in her tone. "My sister has already agreed to protect your academy, and now you tell us you are not even ready?"
"It is all right." Bai Ruxue cut her sister off gently, her expression calm, and turned to look at Cun Caiguang. "How many days does the Dean need?"
"Perhaps... thirty days," Cun Caiguang said carefully, a note of apology in his tone. "That is genuinely the fastest we can manage."
"Then I will give the Dean forty days." Bai Ruxue gave a nod, her tone unhurried. "I will stay here for a little over a month. The Dean need only prepare at his own pace."
"Many thanks, Your Majesty. The courtyard at Crescent Moon Peak is a quiet place. I am afraid it may not be worthy of Your Majesty." Cun Caiguang let out a breath of relief and quickly drew a key to a separate courtyard from his sleeve, holding it out with both hands to Bai Ruxue.
"There is no need for such courtesy, Dean."
Bai Ruxue accepted the key, gave a nod of thanks, and left the courtyard with Little Green.
"Sister, I really think you should not have agreed to Cun Caiguang's request in the first place."
Walking through the mountain forest, Little Green's tone carried a note of lingering resentment, clearly something she had been holding in for some time.
When Cun Caiguang had first come to the Four Seas to ask Bai Ruxue for her protection, Little Green had been opposed to it from the start.
Because the matters surrounding the Hanshan Academy were far too numerous and tangled, and if her sister stepped in to help, she would inevitably offend any number of factions throughout the Demon Realm but her sister had agreed in the end regardless.
Little Green had not been able to talk her out of it, and had no choice but to let it go and now, her sister was going to stay here for a full forty days.
And as far as Little Green knew, quite a few factions were already secretly sharpening their blades, preparing to move against the Hanshan Academy.
What if, within these forty days, those factions struck early?
Would her sister not be caught up in it, trapped here in the Demon Realm with no way to free herself?
"Once I have given my word to someone, how could I take it back?" Bai Ruxue smiled gently and spoke in a soft tone. "Do not worry. Nothing will go wrong. Your sister will handle it properly."
"Aah." Little Green let out a quiet sigh, a note of incomprehension in her voice. "Sister, I genuinely cannot understand it. You have always disliked the Confucian tradition. What could these demon scholars in this academy in the Demon Realm possibly have to do with you?"
"Nothing much, really." Bai Ruxue's tone was even. "It is only that at this Hanshan Academy, every scholar is required to read one particular book."
She extended a slender finger and pointed lightly ahead.
Not far away, a number of scholars were walking along while reading from a book held in their hands.
And on the cover of that book were written the characters, Unity of Knowledge and Action.
Bai Ruxue withdrew her finger and smiled faintly.
"This, then, is my reason."
