Chapter 499: Go and Meet Your Future Husband
Chapter 499: Go and Meet Your Future Husband
"Miss Tushan?"Looking at the young woman walking along the street, Liu Shui was rooted to the spot, her steps stopping of their own accord.
Miss Tushan was walking behind another woman.
She was dressed in a Daoist robe, her waist as slender as a willow switch, so fine it seemed as though the gentlest pressure might snap it.
The silk-braided tassels hung at her side, swaying softly with each breath.
The front of the Daoist robe was slightly open, revealing the moon-white inner garment beneath. The robe was generous in cut and yet could not conceal the graceful fullness of the figure it clothed, the fabric across her chest pulled into a gently rounded arc.
Her eyes were luminously clear, like the water of a mountain stream running in stillness, her nose fine and upright, her lips a naturally pale red without the aid of any cosmetic. The line of her jaw was soft and rounded, and seen from the side it curved like a shallow crescent moon.
Three years had passed since Liu Shui had last seen Tushan Jingci, but this young woman before her resembled her so closely that they might have been cast from the same mold.
The only difference was the color of the hair.
The young woman before her wore her hair in its natural black, dark as ink, without any pins to bind it up, only loosely gathered behind and held with a ribbon of matching color.
The ends of her hair reached her waist and moved gently with her steps. A few wayward wisps pressed against her cheek, making that face appear even more pale and lustrous.
In Liu Shui's memory, Miss Tushan had hair the color of white snow, like the purest snowfall condensed into each strand, cool and noble.
"But what if this is Miss Tushan?" Liu Shui thought to herself. The more she turned it over, the more she felt the idea was not without possibility.
She took a step forward, intending to call out and confirm but in that instant, a breath of wind passed through, and the two young women vanished from Liu Shui's sight.
The street remained as busy as before, people passing in every direction. It was as though the whole scene had been a figment of her imagination, and the two women had never been there at all.
In the city lord's manor of Chuncha City, as that young woman entered the great hall with her disciple, all the sect masters gathered at the celebration feast rose to their feet and clasped their hands in a bow, their manner respectful. "We pay our respects to Daoist Master Yun Xi."
"There is no need for such ceremony, everyone. Please be seated." Daoist Master Yun Xi returned the bow with a courteous gesture of her own, her voice gentle and unhurried.
"Daoist Master, please, this way." Xu Donghui, the Moonwatch Sect's sect master who stood at the head of those present, gestured with a welcoming hand and led Daoist Master Yun Xi toward the seat of honor.
After Daoist Master Yun Xi and her disciple had taken their seats, quite a few pairs of eyes turned their way without prior arrangement.
Among the younger generation in particular, most gazes fell on the disciple at Daoist Master Yun Xi's side.
This young woman, whose name was Gui Junmeng, paid no notice at all to the eyes directed at her and sat upright and proper beside her master, her manner composed and unhurried, looking neither left nor right.
"We have received word that in addition to our capture of Chuncha City, all four of the Alliance's other armies have also successfully taken their objectives. The position of our Alliance is now strong on every front!"
Xu Donghui raised his cup high and looked around at the assembled company, his voice carrying through the hall.
"I raise the first cup to everyone here!"
"Please!"
Everyone raised their cups together.
The wandering cultivator Wang Feiyu wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, excitement written across his face, his voice pitched higher than usual. "And it is not only our side that is making progress. Within the demon sects and demon kingdoms as well, conflict has been breaking out everywhere! Since the Second Human-Demon War, the demon sects and kingdoms have been tearing each other apart, each trying to become the dominant power of the Demon Realm and forge a new order. For us humans, this is an opportunity that comes along once in a thousand years!"
"Ha ha ha, and you have not heard the best of it. I understand the Tushan clan has already taken the lead in forming an alliance of their own, something called the Ten Thousand Demons Alliance, and they are locked in a fight to the death with other demon kingdoms!"
"Good! Let them tear each other apart. Let them fight until their heads split open!"
"That is right! Our human race is united in a single purpose, while the demons bicker and fight among themselves. Now is the moment for the human race to rise!"
The voices went back and forth, growing more animated with every exchange.
Through it all, Daoist Master Yun Xi offered no remarks on the passionate words filling the banquet hall. She sat in quiet composure, a faint smile on her face, as though none of it touched her.
An hour later, after the wine had gone around several times, Yun Xi felt the hour had grown late and rose to take her leave from those present with a few warm words.
Xu Donghui rose personally and accompanied her all the way to the city gates.
"Daoist Master Yun Xi."
Xu Donghui slowed his pace, his expression growing more serious, a barely perceptible flicker of longing for the position of Alliance chief passing through his eyes.
"Four months from now, all the sect masters of our Alliance along with cultivators of the Nascent Soul realm and above will convene. I have heard that Lei Peng and others have proposed the establishment of a formal chief position, and I expect no shortage of people will have their sights on it. Does the Daoist Master have any particular candidate in mind?"
He understood clearly in his heart that Daoist Master Yun Xi would not seek the position herself but if anyone could secure Daoist Master Yun Xi's support, their advantage would be considerably greater.
Yun Xi, however, only gave a gentle shake of her head, her tone even and unhurried. "As long as everyone works together in the interests of the human race's future, it matters little in truth who holds the position. I will not be attending the Alliance assembly in four months' time. Whoever all of you elect is who it shall be."
"Oh? You will not be attending?" Xu Donghui looked surprised.
"That is correct." Daoist Master Yun Xi gave a nod. "I have somewhere I need to take my disciple, and there is someone important we must meet. I ask for Sect Master Xu's understanding."
"I see." Though Xu Donghui was curious about who it was that Daoist Master Yun Xi needed to meet, seeing that she offered no further explanation, he did not press the matter, and simply nodded.
"Sect Master Xu need not accompany us any further. My disciple and I will take our leave here." Daoist Master Yun Xi stopped walking, turned, and gave Xu Donghui a bow.
"Safe travels, Daoist Master." Xu Donghui quickly returned the bow.
Daoist Master Yun Xi gave a gentle nod, then swept her horsetail whisk with a calm hand. A clear wind rose from nowhere, and by the time Xu Donghui looked up again, the two figures had risen above the clouds. Only a faint, lingering trail remained at the horizon.
"Master, who is it that we are going to meet?"
Walking beside her master, Gui Junmeng turned her head with a curious look, her bright, clear eyes fixed on Daoist Master Yun Xi as she asked softly.
"Do you remember a certain marriage contract?" Daoist Master Yun Xi turned her head and looked at her disciple, a meaningful smile rising to her lips.
"Of course I remember." At those words, Gui Junmeng's cheeks colored faintly, and her voice grew lighter without her meaning it to.
How could she not remember?
When she was six years old, her master had told her that a match had been arranged for her, a childhood betrothal.
"We are going..."
Daoist Master Yun Xi reached out and stroked her disciple's long hair gently, her gaze warm and full of love.
"To meet your future husband."
