Chapter 493: Those Are Not Words to Say Carelessly

Chapter 493: Those Are Not Words to Say Carelessly

The following morning, a rather considerable commotion broke out on Lingyun Peak of the Hanshan Academy.Xu Chu, the son of the Moonless Sect's sect master, had been cornered at the gate of his own courtyard by a young woman.

"Xu Chu! Get out here!"

The young woman stood outside the courtyard with both hands on her hips, her voice ringing out clear and unabashed.

"What is the matter? You had the nerve to write that letter dissolving our engagement and send it to the entire Sea Moon Sect all on your own, and now you do not have the nerve to come out and face anyone?"

"Xu Chu! Come out!"

Xu Bei'er stood outside Xu Chu's courtyard with a fierce air, her round almond eyes wide and fixed unblinking on the firmly shut bamboo gate.

Before long, a number of people had come at the sound of the commotion and gathered in twos and threes outside the courtyard, craning their necks to watch and whispering among themselves.

After all, Lingyun Peak was home mostly to young men, and a young woman showing up like this was genuinely a rare sight.

Now, Xu Chu was a demon by nature, but perhaps owing to his temperament, and several years of devoted and earnest study at the Hanshan Academy, he had developed a manner that was notably refined and gentle.

It could even be said that whenever something happened that went beyond the bounds of ordinary propriety, he tended to become flustered and uncertain of himself.

Very much like now, when Xu Bei'er was shouting his name at the top of her voice outside, Xu Chu was genuinely startled.

"Miss Xu, this sort of thing, how can it be spoken of so loudly? We... we should find another place to talk..."

He came hurrying out of his room and reached out to draw her away.

He was not concerned about his own reputation. He was concerned about hers.

The letter he had sent dissolving the engagement had been sent quietly to the Sea Moon Sect because they had never held an engagement banquet, very few people knew about this arrangement, so letting it go would have let it go quietly but Bei'er making this kind of scene here, how could that be right?

"Why can it not be spoken of here? Why should we go somewhere else? I am going to say it right here!"

Xu Bei'er flicked her sleeve and shook off his hand, her almond eyes looking straight at Xu Chu as she spoke to him with complete seriousness.

"Xu Chu, listen to me. That letter you sent dissolving our engagement, I do not accept it!"

"The Moonless Sect is gone, but you are not gone! What is the matter? Are you afraid of dragging me down with you? Afraid that being with you will mean I have to suffer?"

"Xu Chu! Is it you who wants to marry me, or is it your clan that wants to marry me?"

By the time she reached the end, Xu Bei'er's eyes had already grown red, the corners wet with tears, glistening drops circling in her eyes, trembling on the verge of falling.

But she gritted her teeth, raised a hand and wiped hard, clearing the tears completely, and lifted her chin with stubborn pride. "I am telling you, I am going to attach myself to you for the rest of my life. If you dare send me away, you had better be ready to collect my body."

"Either you marry me, or you watch me die. Choose one!"

"..."

The onlookers who had gathered to watch the scene found themselves, for a moment, not knowing what to say at all, and simply stood where they were in a daze.

They looked at the young woman who held her chin up stubbornly, tear stains still on her face but eyes blazing, and at the young demon who stood red-faced and at a complete loss.

All of Lingyun Peak was utterly quiet, with nothing left but the sound of the wind moving through the treetops.

At first, those watching had assumed from the way Xu Bei'er was shouting outside the courtyard that she must be a young woman who had been deceived and abandoned by some faithless man, cheated out of both her money and her heart, and had come in a fury to demand answers.

But who could have anticipated that as they kept listening, the truth of the matter turned out to be this?

These two people had had an engagement to begin with. It was only that the young man, feeling his sect had fallen and his position crumbled, had felt himself no longer worthy of her, had been unwilling to make her suffer by his side, had been unwilling to let her bear any unfavorable reputation, and had therefore taken the initiative to write that letter of dissolution.

And the young woman had not accepted a word of it, and refused absolutely to let it end. Even with his sect gone, even with her own family opposed, even knowing the road ahead would be hard, she was determined to stand by him, and would not let go no matter what was said.

Those who had gathered to watch suddenly felt as though they were the fools who had been played for entertainment in someone else's stage show, or like a dog that had been lured over to watch a spectacle only to have its mouth crammed full of someone else's tender devotion.

These two were absolutely insufferable and then, after this couple had gone back and forth for the better part of an hour, Xu Chu came to understand Xu Bei'er's heart completely, and the two of them were reconciled.

The onlookers, having felt like fools for long enough, decided there was nothing more to see and gradually drifted away.

Xu Bei'er spent the morning in Xu Chu's courtyard.

After lunch, the two of them went together to the administrative hall of the Hanshan Academy, took care of some formalities, and then made their way to Tushan Jingci's courtyard.

They had come to say their farewells to Tushan Jingci.

"Bei'er, are you two leaving?"

Tushan Jingci looked at Xu Bei'er standing before her, deep reluctance showing in her eyes.

"Mm. We have already spoken with our teacher and plan to leave for a while." Xu Bei'er smiled with a gentle warmth, her hand clasped tightly around Xu Chu's as she spoke, their fingers intertwined, full of affection.

"I intend to go to the Sea Moon Sect and speak properly with Bei'er's father, in the hope of seeking his blessing for our marriage."

Xu Chu released Xu Bei'er's hand and gave Tushan Jingci a formal bow.

"I am deeply grateful to Miss Tushan. If Bei'er had not come to find me, I would likely have gone on making the same mistake, let down someone who truly loved me, and lived with regret for the rest of my life."

Tushan Jingci smiled softly and shook her head. "I did not do very much. What mattered was that Bei'er has a strong spirit and came to it herself. All I did was support what she had already decided."

"That was enough." Xu Bei'er picked up the thread, smiling with her eyes curved. "If not for your support, Jingci, I would not have felt so certain in my own heart."

"This time going back to the sect, even if my father refuses, it will make no difference. I will not separate from Xu Chu no matter what. If it comes to it, we will simply elope."

She paused, then continued.

"I have heard that recently in the Demon Realm, there is a Confucian sword immortal who came from the Ten Thousand Laws Realm, and who eloped with a demon to get there. If they can elope, why cannot we?"

"Bei'er, those are not words to say carelessly." Xu Chu immediately straightened his expression, his tone sincere and earnest. "You have my word. I will absolutely never let things come to that."

In Xu Chu's heart, elopement was not something he feared for himself but it was, in the end, the very last resort when all else had failed because it would mean Bei'er would have to choose between the person she loved and her own clan.

Xu Chu was unwilling to let his beloved come to that point, and unwilling to let her be caught in that painful dilemma because of him.
